善待兄弟的約瑟

摘要：本文就圣經(jīng)中約瑟善待曾經(jīng)一度設(shè)計(jì)幾近使其喪命的哥哥們的佳話做出介紹和評(píng)論。約瑟被哥哥們作為奴隸賣去了埃及，在那里受了很多年的磨難困苦，德蒙天佑，從底層爬出變成了法老身邊的大紅人，作為埃及的宰相來(lái)替法老治理即將在埃及出現(xiàn)的七個(gè)豐年和七個(gè)災(zāi)年。當(dāng)災(zāi)年到來(lái)，他的哥哥們來(lái)到儲(chǔ)備充足的埃及買糧，官拜宰相的約瑟并未懲罰跪拜在前的哥哥們，反而寬容了他們?nèi)康淖镄?，并把埃及最好的歌珊地給了他們，還讓他們回去帶來(lái)老父親全家人團(tuán)圓結(jié)尾。

結(jié)論：人們應(yīng)向約瑟一般，在面對(duì)人性丑陋的一面時(shí)，即便遭受無(wú)良的迫害和嫉恨，心中也應(yīng)永存善良、寬容，以寬容大度的心，饒恕別人的過(guò)錯(cuò)，愛與寬恕給人永生，而恨與報(bào)復(fù)，卻是毀滅。

Abstract ：In this paper, Joseph, kind to his brothers whom had once nearly killed him before will be discussed. 

Years of terrible suffering when Joseph has been sold to Egypt as a slave, from the bottom towards the top, he finally became the prime minister to help the Egyptian pharaohs with seven years of abundant and famine. 

When his brothers came to Egypt to buy coin to get alive, as a prime minister, Joseph did not use his power to punish them but forgive all after identifying their repentance. 

Forgiving all and asking his brothers to reunite the whole family and relatives, Joseph also settles his father and brothers in the best of the land, dwell in the land of Goshen admitted by Egyptian pharaohs. 

Conclusion: Every one of us shall be as kind as Joseph, forget the evil things treated to us before, and forgive the persons, who betrayed or framed before: a disposition to be lenient in pardoning others.

On Joseph—Kindness to his Brothers

There are three kinds of brothers recorded in GENESIS, first, after Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him, LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said,“ I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?”

Second, Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, the days of mourning for my father at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.

And the last, Joseph forgive and kind to his brothers whom had once nearly killed him and sold as a slave to Egypt. 

Joseph is different from the others, he chooses to show mercy, but not revenge or kill, when being treated cruelly.

1. Cause

Joseph was the best-hated and most calumniated man in his brothers, as he was clearly in favor his father. Though not being killed, he was caught and sold as a slave in Egypt. 

JOSEPH, the 11th son of Jacob, not only has quite won the heart of his father, but also reported evils done by his brothers made them jealous and hate him, then sold him into slavery in Egypt.

2. Development 

2.1 As a slave, thirteen years of suffering, Joseph always fears LORD, and the LORD was with Joseph, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper. 

As a slave, he first has been bought by Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, and the LORD was with Joseph, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand. And it came to pass from the time that he had made his overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD’s blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake. 

But unluckily that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph, and he refused her. One time, he left his garment in her hand and had been put into the prison on a false charge. 

But the LORD was with Joseph, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper. 

At that time, Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the backers. Then they dreamed a dream both of them, and tell Joseph to interpreter for them. In the third day all things happened as Joseph interpreted.

For this very reason, when Pharaoh troubled by a dream one day, and no magicians and wise men could interpreter, the chief butler does remember Joseph and recommend to Pharaoh. 

When been sent and called, Joseph saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace. Then after giving interpretation, Joseph asked Pharaoh to appoint a man discreet and wise over the land with seven years of abundant and famine. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art, and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Poti-pherah priest of On. 

2.2 His suffering was so severe, but Joseph always feared LORD, and held no grudge against his brothers. He named his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim. 

Though he suffered a lot in the previous thirteen years, he is always feared God, and not yet hate to his brothers, Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: For God, said he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father’s house. And the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction. “Fruitful” means power, stature and property to a watching world. And in spirit of “fruitful”, not only with power and position, but also repay good for evil, as well as love for hate. 

2.3 However, though no rancor against his brothers, Joseph sounded them than unprincipled pardon to see whether they confessed to and regretted for their wrong doing and sincerely repent and earnestly reform them. At last, Joseph found the charity in his heart to forgive them, and extended warm welcome to his brothers by mercy and kind, that he beared them no grudge to their cruel and evil conducts before. 

Yet not hate in his heart, and finally Joseph gave mercy to his brothers whom hurt him before, however, he did not pardon them in unprincipled way. When the years of famine coming, his brothers come into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn without a doubt. And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him. He said unto them, Ye are spies. After listening the interpretation, Joseph send one of them, and let him fetch their brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies. Joseph said those words deliberately and put them all together into ward three days to see whether they have or show any sign of repentance for betraying their brothers. 

“And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is the day with our father, and one is not.(Genesis, Chapter 42:13)” 

“And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us. (Genesis, Chapter 42:21)”

“And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? Therefore, behold, also his blood is required. (Genesis, Chapter 42:22)”

Joseph also showed mercy and be kind to his brothers, as his original intention was to send one of them to fetch the youngest brother, that changed to took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes. Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man’s money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way. 

When they back, and told all the things to their father, as no way to prevent famine, though painful in their father Jacob’s heart, he has no method but let Benjamin to go to Egypt. 

Joseph felt so glad to see his brother, Benjamin, then, in order to test them again, he trapped them into a charge of larceny by sneaking the silver cup into Benjamin’s sack. 

“And Judah said, what shall we say unto my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found. (Genesis, Chapter 44:16)” 

Joseph sounded again, “And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your farther. (Genesis, Chapter 44:17)”

Judah refused, “And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons: (Genesis, Chapter 44:27)”

“And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since: (Genesis, Chapter 44:28)”

“And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. (Genesis, Chapter 44:29)”

“Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his wife is bound up in the lad’s life; (Genesis, Chapter 44:30)”

“It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servant shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave. (Genesis, Chapter 44:31)”

“For thy servant became surely for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever. (Genesis, Chapter 44:32)”

“Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my load; and let the lad go up with his brethren. (Genesis, Chapter 44:33)”

Joseph was satisfied with their turnarounds, and told them who he was. His brothers were troubled at his presence, they were frightened to say nothing. But Joseph showed mercy and lenient to them, “Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life. (Genesis, Chapter 45:5)”

“And God sent me before you to preserve you posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. (Genesis, Chapter 45:7)”

“So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt. (Genesis, Chapter 45:8)”

2.4 Joseph asked his brothers to bring their old father to Goshen, the best land of Egypt, as well as the whole big family. They happily lived there together and blessed by Joseph for all of seventy-two years. 

Moreover, Joseph asked his brothers to bring their old father to Egypt immediately, “And thou shalt dwell in the land of Goshen, and thou shall be near unto me, thou, and thy children, and thy children’s children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou hast: (Genesis, Chapter 45:10)” “And there will I nourish thee; for yet there are five years of famine; lest thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast, come to poverty. (Genesis, Chapter 45:11)” 

Joseph settled his father and brothers in the best land of Egypt, let them dwell in the land of Goshen. The whole family, the old father, all his brothers, and all their children, for all of seventy-two years under the umbrella of Joseph. 

But after their father had passed away, this inspires fear into the heart of his brothers, they thought that Joseph gives pardon to them because of their father, and he must not forgive and requite all the evil which they did to him before. So they sent a messenger to intercede and ask for forgive from Joseph. Then his brothers went and fell down before Joseph, and said, “Behold, we be thy servants. (Genesis, Chapter 50:18)” And Joseph said to them, “Fear not: for am I in the place of God?” (Genesis, Chapter 50:19)” Joseph wept and comfort them, “But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. (Genesis, Chapter 50:20)” “Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. (Genesis, Chapter 50:21)” He comforted and kindly to them. 

Conclusion

Every one of us shall be as kind as Joseph, forget the evil things did to us before, and forgive the persons, who betrayed or framed before: a disposition to be lenient in pardoning others. When face the ugly side of human nature, even suffer persecution and jealousy, our heart shall with of a kind and gentle disposition, compassionate feelings that support a willingness to give forgiveness and tolerance. As one embraces all others in love and forgiveness that have gone forgetful and into harm, one also embraces oneself.

Requite injustice with kindness, requite evil with good.
